Locating a fault on the ZEV hydrant network

Exploring the installation location

In solving the problem of uncontrolled leakage of water on the hydrant network, we were addressed by the representatives of the Association of condominium owners Ranko Shipka 78 B.

Since the documentation and cadastre of underground installations were not available to them, it was necessary to locate the position of the pipeline direction.

Locating the fault on the hydrant installation

Instalacija vode

The location was performed with a detector of installations, cables and metal pipes and precisely marked the found route of water installations.

After the excavation of the installation, water leakage was observed at the entrance of the installation to the facility at the position near the water meter shaft. metoda korelacije

Further works determined a leak on both parts of the hydrant network. Parts of the water supply network lead to the entrances to the adjacent entrances, and whose hydrant network is supplied from the same water meter.

Lociranje geofonom

A fault was found in the business premises of the building by the method of correlation and listening to the pipeline route with an acoustic sound detector - geophone.

Further testing and research located the potential location of the second fault in the second part of the hydrant installation. This completed the work of researching losses on the hydrant installation of the ZEV.

Programming of water meters on LORA WAN network

LORA WAN network installation

During the work on measurements and research of losses on the Project "Development of a mathematical model of the water supply and sewerage system of Gradiška with a plan for their development", and after analyzing the results, it was determined that one of the types of losses and errors in measuring water meters. The reason for that is their age, ie longer service life without their rehabilitation and calibration.

The next segment of losses is that a certain number of consumers pay for water in a lump sum, ie without owning a water meter. In the further continuation of the realization of the conclusions from the Project, it was necessary to procure a certain number and type of water meters. As an experimental project, the proposal by "NMAqua" was to procure a water meter that will have the ability to transmit data, so without the need to read the situation. The whole process takes place automatically, ie according to the needs of the user, the reading is performed within one month.

Installation and programming of water meters

A solution has been found in water meters that use the LoRaWAN network architecture - Ultrasonic water meter QALCOSONIC W1.

LoRaWAN ™ is a “Low Power Wide Area Network” (LPWA) network intended for operation in wireless battery-powered communication in a regional, national or global network.

LoRa (Long Range) is a low power wide area network (LPVAN) technology. It is based on broad spectrum modulation techniques, derived from a wide range of chirp technology

The LoRaWAN network architecture is typically set up in a star-of-stars topology in which the gateway is a transparent bridge when forwarding messages between end devices and a central network server.

Communication between end devices and gateways is widespread on different frequency channels and data rates. Due to the spectrum technology, communication with different data rates does not interfere with each other

LoRa devices and the open LoRaWAN® protocol offer an efficient, flexible and cost-effective solution to real-world problems in rural and indoor use cases, where cellular and Wi-Fi / BLE networks are based on inefficiencies.

As part of the pilot project, eight such water meters were procured and installed at consumers at different locations and distances from repeaters, as well as visual reading.

Water meters have the ability to work with three data transmission technologies: LoRa, NFC and M-Bus

After that, it was necessary to program the water meter for the LoRaWAN network, ie enter the data necessary for smooth operation and establish communication with the server on this platform, which was done by the "Nmaqua" team.

During December, the programming interval is one hour.

After a certain period, it was noticed that water meters at a very remote location, as well as a water meter installed in the basement, have difficulty in communication.

In the coming period, several more repeaters will be installed to cover the wider area of the city.

Analysis of the condition of the spring near Shipovo

Flow measurement at the source

At the spring near Shipovo, we performed control and flow measurement at catchments, despite very difficult hydrometeorological conditions. Due to the urgency and necessity of reviewing the situation on the mentioned network, we met the needs of our clients "KIV-ING" d.o.o. Banja Luka.

The flow measurement was performed on the water supply network which supplies the suburban settlement and the industrial forest complex. Although the conditions were very bad due to the snow, which covered the route of the pipeline as well as the catchment, the measurement was still performed. Due to poor conditions, the measurement was performed in a limited period of time.

Flow measurements were performed on the pipeline after catchment, as well as on the pipeline before the collection tank.

Condition analysis and remediation proposals

Based on the current flow measurement and the obtained results, as well as the needs of consumers, we performed a partial analysis of the network condition.

Proposals for rehabilitation works and bringing the spring into functional condition were also presented, in order to use the maximum capacity.

In the following period, after the stabilization of the weather, it is necessary to accurately locate the directions and connection point of the pipeline, as well as all-day flow measurements.

After measuring and analyzing the value of the night flow, the location of the losses on the pipeline will be located.

Based on the measurement results, a needs analysis was performed for the total number of inhabitants in the consumption area, which amounts to 1700 inhabitants. According to the results of flow measurement, it can be concluded that at this moment the source would have sufficient capacity to supply the consumption area, noting that the current measurement was performed and that the measurement should take several days to make the most accurate conclusion. In that way, the hourly and daily unevenness and the minimum night flow would be determined, and on the basis of which more accurate conclusions could then be made.

During the measurement, certain differences were noticed at the temporary measuring points, and investigative works should be continued and leak detection.

The current measurements made for the settlements of Rataj, Ocrkavlje and Miljevina are only introductory and for a more detailed finding of losses it is necessary to make a 24-hour or 48-hour measurement in order to be able to analyze minimum night flow, and whose values are most relevant for the analysis of losses for the measured area.

Based on the Agreement on the performance of the service of measuring and detecting losses on the water supply installation between "NMAqua" s.p. Banja Luka and "POSLOVNA ZONA" a.d. Banja Luka, works on inspection, control and flow measurement were performed. Measurements were performed at hubs determined on the basis of the need to consider uncontrolled leakage of water from water supply installations.

Flow measurement

The first and necessary procedure in determining failures and uncontrolled losses in the water supply network was to determine the quantities, ie the flow of water in certain parts of the network. Mjerenje protokaIn addition to continuous and synchronized monitoring of the condition of the water meter, through which water consumption is calculated for all consumers in the BUSINESS ZONE, continuous flow measurement was performed with ultrasonic flow meters

Mjerenje protoka potrošačaDuring the control and tour of a certain group of consumers, as well as on the basis of the obtained information, the flow measurement at the inlet was performed for consumers who are supplied without a measuring device (water meter) in the off-site position, where there was such a need.

Creating a schematic representation of the network (cadastre)

Also, for the needs of this project of measuring and analyzing the condition of the water supply network, it was necessary to make a schematic presentation of the water supply network and connection installations outside the facilities. Katastar mreže The locations of the installed water meters are indicated on it, as well as the measuring points where the flow measurement was performed. The purpose of making an overview map is a clearer view of the state of the network and in order to more easily understand the measurement results, and to precisely determine the priorities of rehabilitation works, ie to eliminate deficiencies in the same.

Network control by noise analysis method - correlation

In order to ensure safety and more detailed inspection and control of the water supply network, and since only significant flows were shown on two branches, first a visual inspection was performed, and then the control of the network and connections by noise recording method.

Snimač šumovaThis method is also known as correlation, which compares the noise on the pipeline between two points on the pipeline, with a noise recorder - correlator.

Geophone water supply network control

After this check, on all parts of the network where any increased frequency of sound was felt by the correlation method, the network was inspected by listening to noise on the ground with acoustic sound detectors - geophones. Detekcija geofonom

Thus, geophones, as the final method of testing faults in the water supply network where increased noise intensities occurred, examined parts of the network that goes on an unpaved surface.

Geofon na priključku

Parts of the network at the crossings were also inspected, and on that occasion no faults were noticed, which confirmed the correctness of this part of the water supply installations.

Pressure control

The correctness of the water supply network, ie shortcomings in terms of the existence of losses on the same, is proven by measuring the pressure in one water supply system. As a confirmation of correctness, the pressure was measured at two measuring points.

Mjerenje na hidrantu Pritisak na instalaciji

The hydrant on the main city pipeline in the immediate vicinity in front of the "Business Zone" was determined for the first measuring point, and the second in the circle of the "Business Zone". The results showed that there is no deviation in the pressures, which once again confirmed the correctness of this water supply system.

Based on the review, control and measurement, the report lists all the shortcomings that were observed in terms of oversized water meters in some businesses, the lack of water meters in a number of consumers who are charged at a flat rate. Also, the differences in water meter readings that occur are very small losses, which are in accordance with the IWA (International Water Association) methodology and are called inevitable losses and they cannot be located, so the sanitary consumption on the hydrant network was noticed, which is not verified on the water meter.

All these shortcomings were presented to the management of the "Business Zone", which must be eliminated in order to avoid unnecessary losses.

Flow control on the water meter

On that occasion, an ultrasonic flow meter was installed in the water meter shaft on the installation behind the water meter with a diameter of DN100 mm. Mjerenje protoka na vodomjeruThe purpose of the measurement is to monitor the current state of the network, during the research and manipulation of the network. Preliminary control and inspection determined the existence of a malfunction on the sanitary network, while no more visible losses were noticed on the hydrant installation.

Initial flow measurement results showed a value between 1.3 l / s to 1.6 l / s. Based on the situation on the ground, where there are currently no consumers, it was evident that there was a significant leak and loss on the installation of the sanitary network.

Based on preliminary measurements, the monthly loss was about 3758.40 m³.

Installation and shaft control

The network was checked and controlled, based on the situation with the condition of the water supply installations from the water meters to the facilities.

On that occasion, a visual and physical inspection of the valve in the pump substation was performed, as well as the line shafts in which the valve is located. Inspection and control was performed first on the main direction of the pipeline, and then on its side branches.

Locating the fault location

The investigation led to the location of the fault and located the problem. The mentioned part of the abandoned installation is blocked, and in the part of the business department "F" and "D", detected defects on the cisterns, which are out of order, are blocked.

After several days of control of the water meter, it was determined that there are no uncontrolled leaks and losses at the sanitary installation, and the Project was successfully completed.

Commissioning of measuring devices

Commissioning of measuring devices in Vodovod Gradiška

In the preparatory phase, as well as during the implementation of the Project "Development of a mathematical model of the water supply and sewerage system of Gradiška with a plan for their development", KP "Vodovod" a.d. Gradiška performed continuous procurement and installation of flow meters. They are then installed by District Measurement Area (DMA).

In previous years, this company had measuring equipment, ie electromagnetic flow, pressure and noise meters - MWM System Martinek Gmbh. With them, for the purposes of control, five measuring DMA zones were supervised. These zones have been marked as a pilot project in the city center.

However, after the procurement and installation of these meters, they were in operation for a short time. The reason is that there was no team that would deal with losses and unearned water.

Only with the launch and implementation of the Project on the water supply network, the management decided to put these meters into operation. The goal, as well as their function, is to cover certain people with them DMA measurement zones.

At the end of March 2019, and for the purpose of training the meter, a Contract was signed on performing the service of checking the correctness and putting in Kontrola sonde MWMfunctions, and the commissioning of electromagnetic flow, pressure and noise meters (MWM), between “Vodovod” a.d Gradiška and “NMAqua” s.p.

In the following period, visual inspection and control of probes, power supply units, electronics and modems was performed. After that, the equipment was completed, power supply units were procured, as well as GSM telephone cards for data transfer, etc.

Software package installation

After trial operation and test measurements, due to better performance, a new software package was installed for remote reading and establishing communication with measuring probes.

Gradiška project - reduction of non-revenue water

In business talks in late 2018 between the management of NMAqua s.p. Banja Luka and the Institute for Water Management d.o.o. Bijeljina, an agreement in principle was concluded on participation in the realization of the Study "Development of a mathematical model of the water supply and sewerage system of Gradiška with a plan for their development". The main tasks of this project for our team was to perform measurements of flow, pressure, and after the results obtained analysis and in agreement with the Institute to develop a plan of further activities. For each completed task, in principle, a Technical Report on measurements with key observations is made, which will be an integral part of the Main Report upon completion of the Project.

Signing of the agreement

After that, the Contract for measurements on the water supply and sewerage system of Gradiška was signed with a period of seven months until the completion of measurements, testing and preparation of Technical Reports.

At the beginning, initial flow measurements were performed - balancing the quantities at the water source, ie controlling the capacity of well pumps at five wells, as well as the amount of water at the outlet of the water tower. After the obtained results of measurements and analyzes, a plan of further activities was made. It consisted of measuring the flow, ie the input of the amount of water in all formed DMA zones on the Gradiška water supply system.

Measurements of flow, pressure, noise loggers

In addition to measuring the flow, pressures were continuously measured, both in the area of the City and at all pumping stations, and at the same time at the beginning of 2019, measurements were made at the sewer outlet into the Sava River.

After preliminary measurements, field control of the network with forest loggers was performed, as well as day and night surveys of the water supply network. As part of that, a night check of the flow on transport and pipelines was performed, which, based on the measurement results, showed a significant deviation of the flow quantities from the real consumption.

Support

In the research of losses on the water supply network, we wholeheartedly received the support of the management of KP Vodovod Gradiška who spent a good part of their time with us in the field, as well as our main consultants, and were ready to actively participate in the implementation of commitments.

In addition to the results already achieved, which are significant in finding invisible losses, in the coming period until the end of the project we expect to significantly reduce losses in the water supply network in Gradiška.
