Examination of water losses in the Lopare distribution network

MEASUREMENT ON THE WATER SUPPLY NETWORK

Tunicipality of Lopare together with JKP "Vodovod" d.o.o. Lopare has prepared a program of works for the rehabilitation of water losses in the water supply system of Lopare. The main goal of the aforementioned Program of Works is to define losses, i.e., uncontrolled leakage from the water supply network, which will be removed through other activities. After the preliminary actions in terms of collecting technical data on the water supply system and data on consumers, as well as the preparation of cadastral documents, we started to measure and balance the amount of water in the system. The flow was measured at eight measuring points for 24 hours.

De measured the pressure on the entire water supply system at nine measuring points, including the lowest and highest elevations. In addition to the mentioned works, during the measurement, the manipulation of the sector closures was also carried out in order to balance the amount of water in certain parts of the system. Noise loggers were deployed at 18 locations, and after analyzing all the results, control and testing of certain parts of the water supply network was carried out, and faults were located.

Practical training was also carried out for working with the "Fuji" brand correlator in the field during the investigation of faults in parts of the water supply network. All the results were summarized, and after the analysis, a report was drawn up on the measurement and examination of losses in the distribution network of Lopar with a proposal to the investor to divide the implementation of the recovery of losses in the water supply system of Lopar into short-term, medium-term and long-term activities, which are also listed in the report.

Measurements on the hot pipe UKC RS

Based on the Agreement between the investors "VAMED Standortentwicklung und Engineering GmbH” Wien Österreich, and the contractor “NMAqua” s.p. Banja Luka, measurements were made on the hot spring of the University Clinical Center of the Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka.

 According to the investor's request for the needs of the "TEB Banja Luka" Project, we measured the flow and temperature on the hot water pipes in the thermal substation in the Technical Block of the UKC Banja Luka. The measurement had to be carried out continuously for 21 days during the entire 24 hours.

Dy measuring the flow and temperature, as well as the amount of delivered thermal energy, three pairs of pressure-return hot water pipes, i.e. six pipes, are included, which serve with thermal energy the hospital department "Infectious", department "Gynecology" and department "Central Medical Block" (CMB).

After the preparatory works and the provision of electricity sources, the preparation of the hot water pipe was carried out by cleaning at the place of installation of the probes for measuring the flow, as well as the probes for measuring the temperature. Metal clamps and fixed probes were placed, and the connection to ultrasonic flow and temperature meters was made. During these measurements, six ultrasonic (UZ) meters were used AQF 2000. Three UZ meters were used to measure the flow, while three meters were used to measure the temperature, in such a way that each meter with two probes measured the temperature on the pressure and return hot lines for a specific department. 

The flow measurement was performed on the return hot water pipe, based on the recommendation of the manufacturer of the measuring instruments and previous measurement experiences. The reason is that an even flow of fluid in the pipe was achieved on the return hot line, that is laminar calm flow, uniform and without turbulence in parallel layers, without mixing between them, in contrast to the pressure hot water pipeline, where the flows are turbulent, and the speeds are much higher and variable due to the close proximity of the pumps. Also near the pumps a certain percentage of liquid cavitation occurs,  i.e. discontinuities or "cavities" (steam bubbles in water) appear in the liquid stream, which negatively affect the measurement accuracy.

After the measurements were completed, the Elaborate on the measurement of temperature, flow and quantity of delivered thermal energy was prepared, which was forwarded to the Investor in electronic and printed form.

LThe suspicious part of the network was located by separating parts of the hydrant network. After that, the suspicious part of the network was listened to with an acoustic sound detector - a geophone. A fault was located at the branch of the hydrant network branch that separates towards the main facility of the factory.

The location of the leak was marked on the asphalt surface, and after the repair of the defect, it was determined by checking that there is no longer any loss on the hydrant network, thus successfully completing this work.

Program of works for the rehabilitation of water losses in the water supply system of Lopare

REDUCTION OF WATER LOSSES IN THE LOPARE SYSTEM

The Municipality of Lopare, together with the JKP "Vodovod" Lopare, has prepared a program of works for the rehabilitation of water losses in the water supply system of Lopare. The main goal of the mentioned Program of Works is the definition of certain losses, i.e., uncontrolled leakage from the water supply network, which will be eliminated through other activities. The result of detection of losses and subsequent elimination should lead to a reduction of losses in the water supply system of Lopare.

Vodovodna mreza In order to prepare for the implementation of the activities in question from the Work Program at the end of 2022, together with the representatives of JKP "Vodovod" Lopare, we visited the distribution water supply system of Lopar and collected basic information about it.

According to the Work Program in question, the contractor for loss testing is required to perform two tasks:

  • Investigation of water losses in the city's distribution network, which includes the execution of the required number of simultaneous flow measurements for the purposes of confirming/controlling the water balance, as well as the required number of pressure measurements and noise recording with correlators and noise recorders on all main distribution pipelines.
  • Training of local staff to work with FUJI water loss research equipment, which the Municipal Administration received as a donation.

It should be noted that the plan is to train local staff during the period of loss investigation, using practical examples.

Also, the Work Program defined that the Contractor must carry out the following activities during the investigation of water losses:

  • Preparation of bases for the display of the distribution water supply system of Lopare;
  • Flow measurement;
  • Pressure measurement;
  • Noise measurement;
  • Other measurements that are determined to be necessary;
    After the field visit and the analysis of the transmitted data, it can be concluded that the losses in the water supply system of Lopare are about 60%, which will be additionally checked and confirmed by measurements.

The goal is to provide sufficient amounts of clean (drinking) water and create opportunities for expanding the existing network, given that the coverage of the municipality of Lopare by the water system is currently very low, around 30% of the population.

The mentioned activities will be financed from the own funds of the municipality of Lopare, EIB loans and Grant funds from the Government of the Republic of Srpska.

It is a reliable method of remote detection of leaks in water supply networks, sewerage and heating, as well as the detection of water saturation of the soil in the field of traffic infrastructure and civil engineering.

This satellite imaging technology is used for Leak Detection and Water Loss Reduction, Contamination Prevention, Flood Monitoring and Pipeline Condition Assessment, as well as in the Pipeline Replacement Program.

One of the topics of the lecture was related to the Optimization of communal infrastructure - OKI, and part of the presentation also referred to the solutions on the sewerage network and wastewater treatment plants.

As an innovative solution in water companies NMAqua presented the program AquaWEB as a software solution that enables easy monitoring of the water supply network by automatically analyzing data collected from meters and through loss indicators, which are recommended by IWA in real time monitors the state of technical losses in individual zones or the entire network. AquaWeb is a fully configurable platform, which can be adapted to the different needs of water companies.

MEASUREMENT OF FLOW IN THE TANK

Based on the Terms of Reference for the Development of the Reconstruction Project of the local water supply system Međudražje in the settlement Međudražje - MZ Zavalje - City of Bihać, Center for Design and Consulting d.o.o. Banja Luka hired us to perform a 48-hour flow measurement at a pre-determined measuring point in the reservoir.

As part of the project task, among other things, it was necessary to measure the flow in order to see and assess the abundance of springs and available water, for the settlement Međudražje, and at the entrance to the reservoir from the spring.

In order to fully understand the condition of the source and the capacities currently available in the distribution of drinking water, the measurement was performed with an ultrasonic portable flow meter AQF 2000.

The ultrasonic flow meter is installed on the LŽ 80mm pipeline and programmed for a measurement interval of 1 min in a time period of 48 hours.

Based on the previously signed Agreement with the "Institute for Water Management" d.o.o. from Bijeljina and for the needs of drafting project documentation for the development and improvement of the water supply system managed by KP "Vodovod" a.d. At the beginning of 2022, we carried out the third part of the research of underground installations in Gradiška.

Due to the need to measure the flow in order to assess the available quantities of water, as well as the condition of certain parts of the water supply system Public Utility Company "Kraljeva Gora" d.o.o. Han Pijesak contacted us again with a request for the mentioned works.

In mid-October, 24-hour flow measurements were performed at pre-determined temporary and control measuring points with ultrasonic portable flow meters AQF 2000.

The flow meters are distributed from the Javornik reservoir along the entire network to the end consumers in the settlements of Džimrije, Mrkalji, Mironja and Ljeskovac, so that the condition of the water supply network could be better understood.

Na osnovu potreba vršenja mjerenja protoka i pritiska u cilju sagledavanja raspoloživih količina vode, kao i stanja vodovodnog sistema sa filterskog postrojenja “Tilava” sa kojeg se snabdijeva veći dio opštine Istočno Sarajevo, izvršili smo u prvoj fazi početna terenska mjerenja protoka i pritisaka na unaprijed utvrđenim stalnim i privremenim-kontrolnim mjernim mjestima.

Pressure measurement on MMP1 was performed in the underground hydrant in the street of the First Sarajevo Brigade near "Adiko" bank in the time of 48 hours with a measurement interval of 1 min. 

After the pressure logger was dismantled, the data was read and diagrams were made.

In order to improve the situation in the water supply of KP "Vodovod i kanalizacija" a.d. East Sarajevo and maintained the trend of continuous water supply without reductions, it is necessary to implement measures and interventions on the existing water supply and communal infrastructure, and above all to strengthen the detection and elimination of failures in order to save the amount of water currently available.
